What Are Oracle Cards?

posted in: Oracle Cards General

For many years, oracle cards have been a part of my daily regimen. I’ve been working with them for so long that sometimes I forget that some folks have not yet encountered this wonderfully inspiring tool.

Oracle cards are a deck of cards that are used for inspiration, self-reflection, creative prompts, divination, and or just plain fun. How they are used is up to you.

Oracle cards tend to get lumped together with Tarot cards but there are some major differences. Tarot cards are very structured. While the author and artist vary with each deck, the meaning for each card is the same no matter what deck you choose. For example, if you pull the Hermit card in a tarot deck, it is always a call for introspection. On the other hand, oracle cards are incredibly diverse, themed-based, and there are no set rules for the content.

Sock Monkey Oracle Example

My intention for the Sock Monkey Oracle was to complete a deck of cards that would provide keen, fun-loving guidance. I’m happy to report that no matter what message you receive, each card will make you smile.

The Sock Monkey Oracle has several fun spreads. You can choose one that best matches your type of query or you can get creative and make up your own spread. My favorite way to use these cards is as a daily reflection. I hold the card deck to my heart and ask, “What do I need to know to be my best today?”

Then I shuffle the deck and select one card. Once selected, I turn the card over for my main message. In this case, it was “Dance”. Here’s the meaning of the card as shown in the accompanying guidebook:

MAIN MESSAGE

Can you hear the cicada? It is inviting you to dance! Sway like a flamingo. Prance like a gazelle. Bob your head like a cockatoo.

Grab some coconuts and play the bongos. Fly with the greatest of ease on your jungle trapeze. When life seems to come to a halt, it is time to get up and move. The dance doesn’t have to be anything formal. Simply sway to your own rhythm, and you will shake any negative energy off of you. You’ll feel a huge sense of relief when you are through.

Do you feel like you are already in the groove? This card may signify that your movements are in harmony with life’s flow.

SYMBOLIC FROLICS

Dance! Chakra flow. Movement. Energy release. Physical expression. Joy.

AFFIRMATION

I love that I am a joyful dancer.

Sometimes I get a bit too serious, and this card is a great reminder for me to have fun!

Bottom Line

So, back to oracle cards in general. If you are looking for help looking within, oracle cards are a great way to tune in to yourself. Find a deck that speaks to you and play.
