Why Make a Sock Monkey?

They are beloved and timeless folk art toys: Sock monkeys have been cherished since the Great Depression, thanks to their iconic red-heeled design.

These toys are eco‑friendly & budget-wise: You can repurpose the socks you have on hand, or source new ones. Either choice is budget-friendly.

And they are an oh so thoughtful gift: Hand‑crafted toys carry special meaning and charm.

Want to make your own sock monkey? Below, you will find two ways to do just that. I’m sharing instructions that came with my vintage red heel socks, and instructions from Tamara Hudson, a gifted monkey maker. I also found a great video from Professor Pincushion!

Tamara Hudson’s Version

Tamra Hudson’s Sockmonkey.net is a fabulous resource! Here, I found new style instructions and a really helpful video. For my next monkey, I’m going to try the new style instructions as Hudson’s includes extra tips.

Note: Over the years, the red heel design has changed slightly. So if you want to make your monkey with vintage grins, you’ll need to search eBay and Etsy If you like the new grins, you can find them here. Not sure what you want? Click here to get the inside scoop on vintage versus modern socks. I like them both!

By the way, Hudson made these twin stunt doubles for me as I did not want to take my vintage sock monkey on my book tour. I love them!

Check out Hudson’s video below. It’s designed to accompany her pre-sewn sock monkey kits, but it also includes valuable tips that you won’t find in traditional instructions. For the best monkey-making results, I recommend watching both videos!

I also love this video tutorial from Professor Pincushion! Check it out 🙂

🧶 Materials You’ll Need

Steps

1. Prepare the Sock

  • Lay a clean sock flat and turn it inside out
  • With scissors, cut along the heel seam to form the monkey’s arms and legs
  • Pin securely to keep pieces in place

2. Sew the Limbs

  • Fold each leg & arm piece right side together
  • Sew or hand-knit along edges, leaving one side open for stuffing
  • Trim seam allowances & turn pieces right-side out

3. Stuff and Attach

  • Stuff firmly with fiberfill
  • Tuck open edges inward and hand‑sew closed
  • Pin limbs onto the body sock to experiment with placement before sewing

4. Form the Body & Tail

  • Cut and seam the body portion to close the torso
  • Create a tail strip stuff lightly, for a floppy tail and firm for a stiff tail, and attach to the body.

5. Head & Facial Features

  • Using red yarn or ribbon, gather the top of the sock to shape the head, sew to secure
  • For the mouth: use red‑heel heel as lower lip; sew a running stitch along the edge to define the mouth
  • Attach button eyes or create embroidered or felt eyes to make it baby-safe.

6. Final Touches

  • Optional: Decide whether to create a hat. Add ribbon bow, heart patch, or other embellishments

💡 Pro Tips

  • Use a needle & cotton thread for invisible hand stitches
  • Sew tightly to avoid stuffing leaks
  • Experiment with colorful or patterned faux-sock fabric for unique designs

FAQs

Q: Why the red‑heel sock?
The bright red heel inspired the monkey’s mouth and became the signature style of the classic Rockford Red Heel Sock Monkey. It is also used for the rear end. I love that it is smiling, whether it is coming or going 🙂

Q: Can I use crew socks instead?
Yes! You can use any soft, stretchy crew sock—just shape your monkey to match the patterns and proportions. I find the cotton-blend socks are easier to work with than the polyester.

Q: How long does it take?
Expect about 3-4 hours for a basic sock monkey. More embellishments may take longer. Mine always seem to take a wee bit longer than I think 🙂
