Haven’s Monkey

The story behind Haven’s monkey is her maternal grandmother made them for her before she was born. My mom is crafty and sews—she grew up in rural central Maine in the 50s and 60s, on a dairy farm. They didn’t even have indoor plumbing until she was a teenager in the mid-60s. She grew up as a farmer’s daughter, and on a farm in no-where Maine, you often had to make your toys. A favorite that she learned to make was a sock monkey. She wanted her first granddaughter to have one when she was born. My mom made a large traditional one, but then saw the fun striped socks and decided to sew a fun friend.

Haven played with them as a baby and pulled most of the cute bows my mom had added to ensure you didn’t mistake them for boy monkeys (the striped one has only her hat bow now, but was originally covered in them, so again, it was loved). She also pulled out a lot of the hair that was sticking out of the large traditional one’s hat. Haven loves them both.
